How to Create a Lead Magnet Your Clients Will Actually Use
If you want to know how to create a lead magnet that gets used, start with this. The good ones promise one result, fast. If your free resource takes days to read, your reader will probably never open it, no matter how good it is.
This post gives you a simple formula, the steps to build one in under an hour and real examples for health, fitness and wellness coaches.
Why your free ebook isn't getting downloaded
A lot of coaches start with the same plan. They spend weeks on a 40-page ebook. They fill it with 50 healthy recipes, a full workout plan and a chapter on mindset. They share it, and almost nobody downloads it.
The ebook is too big. Your client is busy and tired. When she sees a big ebook, she sees homework. So she saves it for later, and later never comes.
That costs you more than a few downloads. A free resource is often the first real step someone takes with you. If that step feels heavy, the conversation never starts. Then you go back to the drawing board and lose another weekend building something new.
Nobody wants your free ebook. They want one result, fast.
The lead magnet formula
Here's how it works. A good lead magnet for coaches promises three things:
- A specific outcome. Something your client can picture, like less sugar, a looser back or a better breakfast.
- A specific time frame. A number of days or minutes, so it feels doable.
- Without the headache your client already hates. Name the thing she's tired of, like counting calories or spending hours in the kitchen.
Put those three together and you have a title that answers "What do I get, how fast, and what don't I have to do?"

Lead magnet ideas for coaches, built with the formula
These three come straight from the formula:
- A 3 to 5 day sugar reset for women over 40 without counting calories.
- A 10 minute morning routine that loosens a stiff lower back in 7 days with no gym needed.
- 5 quick breakfasts that keep busy women full until noon.
Now compare them to "50 Healthy Recipes." Each one names a person, a result and a time frame. A reader knows in two seconds if it's for her.
Look at what each one leaves out, too. The sugar reset skips calorie counting, and the back routine works without a gym or any equipment. Each title removes the exact thing your client is tired of, so saying yes feels easy.
More lead magnet ideas you can adapt
Use the same formula for your niche. Keep the result small and the time short.
For fitness coaches:
- A 7 day plan to get back into a workout routine after a long break, with 20 minute sessions you can do at home.
- A 5 minute warm-up that gets your knees ready for squats, with no equipment.
For nutrition coaches:
- A grocery list for a week of high-protein dinners that take 15 minutes or less.
- A 3 day plan to stop the afternoon snack crash without cutting out carbs.
For wellness coaches:
- A 10 minute evening wind-down routine for better sleep this week, with no apps.
- A 5 day stress reset for busy moms that fits into a lunch break.
Pick the one that matches the problem your best clients bring to you most. If you hear the same complaint on every consult call, that's your lead magnet.
The best formats are the simplest
Your resource should take 10 minutes to use, not 10 days. That means small formats win:
- A one-page PDF. A checklist, a short plan or a simple routine.
- A Google Doc. Fast to make and easy to update.
- A short list. Recipes, exercises or steps, five to seven items long.
You don't need a designer. Make it clean, put your name on it and make sure the result in the title is the result on the page.
If writing is the slow part for you, use a tool that helps. I made my "5 Quick Breakfasts That Keep You Satisfied Until Noon" lead magnet in Vibescribe, then downloaded it as a PDF. Any tool works, even a plain Google Doc.
Four mistakes that keep a lead magnet from working
A title with no result in it. "My Healthy Living Guide" doesn't tell anyone what changes for them. Put the outcome in the title, or nobody will know why to ask for it.
Trying to teach everything. Your lead magnet is one small win that shows you know what you're doing. Your program is where the full change happens. If it covers nutrition, training, sleep and mindset, cut it down to the one piece that matches the title.
A title that the content doesn't keep. If the title says 5 breakfasts and the PDF has two pages of theory before the first recipe, you've lost trust on page one. Deliver the result in the first few lines.
No easy way to get it. A great resource hidden behind a link in your bio, a form and a confirmation email will get fewer requests than it deserves. The fewer steps between "I want that" and "I have it," the better.
Fix those four and even a simple one-page PDF will do its job. It gives your reader a quick win, and it gives you a reason to start a conversation.
How to create a lead magnet in under an hour
Follow this order:
- Write the title with the formula. Outcome, time frame and the headache it removes.
- Write the content. Only what delivers the title. Cut everything else.
- Save it as a PDF, or keep it as a Google Doc.
- Get a link. In Thrive Engine or GoHighLevel, upload the PDF to your media library, click the three dots and copy the link. For a Google Doc, set sharing to "anyone with the link" and copy it.
- Test the link in a private browser window to make sure it opens.
Your lead magnet is ready.
A lead magnet only works if people can get it
Making the resource is half the job. People also need a fast, easy way to get it.
You don't need a landing page or an opt-in page for this. End your posts with one word, like "DM me BREAKFAST." When someone sends that word, an automatic reply sends the link in seconds. The same message invites them into your free community. If they say yes, you get their email and a new member who chose to be there.
The person who DMs you a keyword saw your post, opened your messages and asked for help. That's the best lead you can get on social media. Your lead magnet is the reason they ask.
