How to Get Coaching Clients in 2026: The 3-Part System I Use

October 05, 2026

You can post every day for a year and still not get a coaching client. If you want to know how to get coaching clients online, start by giving every post one next step.

This post walks you through the 3-part system I use. It needs a PDF, one workflow and about 30 minutes. You don't need a landing page, an opt-in page or a funnel.

Why your posts get likes but no clients

Picture your last good post. People liked it. A few left a comment. Then they kept scrolling.

They kept scrolling because you never gave them anything to do next.

That's where most coaching content stops. It gets attention and then lets it walk away. So you post more. You try twice a day. You spend another evening filming instead of resting or coaching. And your calendar looks the same.

When I ran my gyms, every class had a next step. Someone took a free class and we booked their next visit before they walked out the door. Nobody left wondering what to do.

Your content needs the same thing. Attention turns into a conversation, and the conversation turns into a client. The next step is the bridge between the two.

Part 1: A free resource people actually want

The first part is your free resource. Some people call it a lead magnet.

This is where a lot of coaches get stuck. They give away a 40-page ebook that nobody wants to read. Nobody wants your free ebook. They want one result, fast.

Use this formula. A good free resource promises a specific outcome, in a specific time frame, without the headache your client already hates.

Here are three examples for health coaches:

  • A 3 to 5 day sugar reset for women over 40 without counting calories.
  • A 10 minute morning routine that loosens a stiff lower back in 7 days with no gym needed.
  • 5 quick breakfasts that keep busy women full until noon.

Now compare those to an ebook with 50 healthy recipes. One of those gets downloaded.

Your resource should take 10 minutes to use, not 10 days. And it can be simple. A one-page PDF or a Google Doc is plenty.

Once it's done, get a link to it. Upload the PDF to your media library and copy the link. If it's a Google Doc, set sharing to "anyone with the link" and copy that.

That's part one.

Part 2: One word at the end of every post

The second part is one word at the end of every post.

Something like "DM me BREAKFAST and I'll send you my 5-day plan."

A like is nice. A DM with a keyword is a lead.

Think about who sends you that message. They saw your post. They opened your DMs. They typed the word BREAKFAST. That's someone asking for help. On social media, that's the best lead you can get.

This is also how to get more coaching clients from the posts you already make. Keep the content you have and add one line at the end.

A few tips:

  • Pick one keyword for each free resource, so you always know what someone asked for.
  • Make it a word that's easy to spell and fits the resource.
  • Put the keyword in every post that relates to that resource, not just one.

Part 3: An automatic reply that invites them in

The third part is what you say back. This is where a lot of coaches lose the lead, because they answer too late.

Someone DMs you BREAKFAST. You reply right away, and everything goes in that first message.

It sounds like this: "Hey, thanks for DMing me. Here's the link to download your 5-day breakfast plan. While I have you, I have a free community for women over 40. It's a safe space where we talk about what we're dealing with. I also give away free resources like this one, and I go live once a week so you can ask me questions. Would you like an invite?"

Now they can say yes or no.

  • If they say yes, ask for their best email and send them the invite.
  • If they say no, reply, "No worries. If you change your mind, I'm here. You can DM me anytime."

Look at what just happened. You went from one DM to an email address and a new member in your community. And they chose to join, so they actually want to be there.

This works, but you have to be there to answer every message. If you answer the next morning, they've moved on. So build the reply once and let it answer in seconds every time, even when you're with clients.

How to build the automatic reply

I build this in Thrive Engine, which runs on GoHighLevel. If you have a GoHighLevel account, you can follow the same steps.

  1. Set the trigger. Choose "Customer Replied."
  2. Add filters. Set the reply channel to Instagram DM. Set the message body to "contains" your keyword. Don't use "exact match."
  3. Type the keyword three ways. All caps, lowercase and capitalized, so it catches everyone.
  4. Send the resource and the invite. Use an Instagram interactive message as a reply to the DM. Paste your resource link and your community invite.
  5. Add quick replies. "Yes, invite me" and "No thanks."
  6. Build both paths. Yes asks for their email. No keeps the door open.
  7. Give group access. Add the people who said yes to your community.
  8. Save and publish.

Once it's published, anyone who DMs you the keyword, now or later, gets the resource and the invite in seconds. When you make your next free resource, duplicate the workflow and change the keyword.

How the 3 parts work together

Diagram of the 3-part system: free resource, one word to DM you, automatic reply with yes and no paths

The whole system fits in four lines:

  • Your post ends with one word to DM you.
  • That word gets them your free resource in seconds.
  • The same message invites them into your free community.
  • When they say yes, you get their email and a new member who chose to be there.

You didn't build a landing page or an opt-in page. You need a PDF and one workflow, and you can set it up in about 30 minutes.

That's level one. Level two adds an email or text follow-up that keeps the conversation going over the next few weeks. But start here.

The steps haven't changed

I built my DVD program the same way, before any of this automation existed. I DM'd people and emailed them myself, and we shipped that program to 26 countries.

The key back then was the same as it is now. Get attention, give people one next step and follow up. The tools are faster now, but the steps haven't changed.

If you're a health coach wondering how to get health coaching clients without a big funnel, this is where I'd start.

See it work on you first

The best way to understand this system is to be on the other side of it.

Open Instagram and DM the word AVATAR to @mythriveengine. You'll get my free AI Avatar Blueprint in seconds. It helps you get clear on exactly who you're talking to, what they care about and which posts pull them in. And you'll see the exact system from this post answer you.

If you'd rather have the whole thing set up for you, book a Thrive Engine demo. We'll walk you through it and see if it's a good fit.
