Loss Aversion Marketing for Coaches: Why Painkiller Lead Magnets Get Downloads

November 03, 2026

Your lead feels her pain about twice as hard as she feels her dream. That's loss aversion marketing in one line, and it's why the lead magnets that get downloads are painkillers, not vitamins.

If your lead magnet sells the dream, it's asking your client to think about something she isn't thinking about right now. This post shows you how to build one around a pain she feels today, and how to keep it speaking only to the people on your path.

What loss aversion marketing means for a coach

2 researchers, Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, found that losing something hurts about twice as much as gaining the same thing feels good. Psychologists call it loss aversion.

A lot of what you'll read about loss aversion marketing is about countdown timers, "only 3 left" banners and limited-time offers. I don't teach that, and I wrote about why in Scarcity Marketing for Coaches Who Keep Their Word.

For a coach, loss aversion means something simpler and more honest. Your client already lives with a loss every day. She's losing energy, sleep, confidence or time. Your job is to name that loss in her words and offer to ease it, with no fake deadline and no pressure.

So at the top of your funnel, pain wins every single time.

Your lead is running from pain or toward a dream

Every prospect is standing in one of 2 places. She's either running away from pain and frustration, or she's moving toward a dream or a desire. Her head only has room for one of those at a time.

Take Sarah Mathews, a made-up lead I use in my videos. She's 45 and she runs her own business. She's carrying about 25 extra pounds, her blood pressure has been creeping up for years, and she runs on coffee and candy all day until she's cooked by 3 PM. Sarah is made up, and nothing in this post is health advice.

At 3 PM on a Tuesday, Sarah isn't dreaming about the body she wants in a year. She's trying to get through the afternoon without another coffee and a candy bar. She's running from the crash.

Now picture what a lot of coaches put in front of her. We see a woman like Sarah and we hand her the dream. "Transform your body after 40!" "Become the best version of you!"

Sarah scrolls right past it. She'd love that body back someday, but her head is full of the crash she's in right now, and the dream has to wait in line.

Painkiller vs vitamin: which one is your lead magnet?

A vitamin is something you know you should take. A painkiller is something you need right now.

Plenty of lead magnets are vitamins. They promise the full transformation and the body she wants back. Your lead agrees she should get to it someday and keeps scrolling.

A painkiller lead magnet names the exact thing that hurts this week and offers to ease it fast. When I ran Sarah through my Avatar X-Ray Lite, it handed back 10 lead magnet ideas. Three of them are "5 Quick Snooze-Proof Morning Moves to Feel Energized Before Work," "7 No-Cook Drive-Thru Detour Lunches That Kill Your 3 PM Crash" and "5 Easy Phone-Down Bedtime Swaps for Deeper Sleep Tonight."

Look at the words in those titles. Before work, your 3 PM crash and tonight. Each one points at a moment Sarah lives through every single day, and each one promises relief she can feel this week. That's a painkiller.

Painkillers, not vitamins. Losing hurts about twice as much as gaining feels good, so a painkiller lead magnet gets the download and a vitamin gets scrolled past

Rule 1: your lead magnet soothes a pain she feels today

That's rule number 1. Your lead magnet needs to soothe a pain your client feels today.

Before a lead magnet title goes out, run it through two checks and then rewrite it. These steps are my own take on rule number 1, so adjust them to your niche.

First, find the moment. Can you name the time of day or the situation where she feels this problem? The 3 PM crash, the second snooze, the last hour of scrolling in bed. If you can't name the moment, you're probably selling a vitamin.

Second, check the timeline. Can she use your lead magnet tonight or tomorrow and feel a difference? If it asks her for 12 weeks before anything changes, she'll save it for later and forget about it.

Then rewrite the title in her words. Sarah would tell a friend she's cooked by 3 PM, so that's the phrase your title should use. Write it the way she'd text it to her best friend.

Run "Transform Your Body After 40!" through those checks and it fails both. There's no moment in it, and nothing changes for months. Now run "7 No-Cook Drive-Thru Detour Lunches That Kill Your 3 PM Crash" through them. The moment is 3 PM. She can try one of those lunches tomorrow. The second title is the one Sarah downloads, because it eases a pain she'll feel again in a few hours.

Rule 2: only talk to the people on your path

Rule number 2 is that you only want to talk to people who are on your path.

If someone isn't a fit for your program, you actually want your message to repel them. Every download from the wrong person clogs your list and burns your follow-up on someone who was never going to buy.

A dream headline like "Become the best version of you!" pulls in everybody, and that's part of the problem. A painkiller aimed at one woman's 3 PM crash pulls in the women who have that crash and lets everyone else keep scrolling. We're separating the signal from the noise.

That's also why painkiller lead magnets make your follow-up easier. When the right person downloads, your emails land on someone who already feels the problem your program solves.

Find the pain she won't say out loud

The hardest part of loss aversion marketing is knowing which pain to name. Your client won't always tell you. Some of the pain sits under the surface, and she'd never say it out loud to a coach.

That's why I built the Avatar X-Ray Lite, a free Claude skill. It answers 25 questions about your client in 3 layers. X is what's happening on the outside, the stuff everybody can see. Y is what she wants and what she tells herself. The shadow is what she won't say out loud, the fear under the frustration and the mask she wears to hide it.

The shadow layer is where the strongest painkillers come from. When you know the fear under the frustration, you can name the pain she feels today in words that make her stop scrolling.
